Trevor Henderson Playing Cards

A full playing card deck based on digital artist Trevor Henderson's cryptid universe. Each card made from scratch, illustrated and printed to scale.

Year :

2025

Industry :

Entertainment/Games

Project Duration :

3 weeks

Project Brief:

As a fan of card games such as poker and blackjack, I was beyond excited to work on a custom playing card project for my Graphic Design Studio I class in 2025. I was tasked with creating an entire deck of cards from scratch, 54 cards in total (4 suits plus 2 jokers), as well as the packaging for the cards.

The requirements for the project were fairly loose, but we were required to give the deck a theme and design everything on them including the backs, different face cards, and the suit symbols.

Solution:

For my deck, I based it around Trevor Henderson, my favorite horror cryptid artist. I wanted to translate his disturbing designs into the vibrant and clean style of standard playing cards, including my favorite creatures of his such as The Man with the Upside Down Face and Siren Head. Each card was digitally hand-drawn and made using Adobe Illustrator, as well as the packaging, then printed and assembled physically.

For the Trevor Henderson fans, there are several easter eggs scattered throughout the deck, including Trevor himself being the Joker cards and his docile creature Lil’ Nugget sneaking around on certain number cards.

Challenges:

The most difficult part of working on this playing card deck was the tight timeframe - 3 weeks to illustrate 54 cards from scratch, plus the packaging! I found myself spending late nights refining my face cards until I felt they were clean enough to be read at a small scale, while still maintaining the details Trevor Henderson worked into each design.

The other most difficult part was the assembly and printing process. Only having access to a limited amount of printers, I did multiple waves of test printing before I was happy with alignment and color on the deck. After the printing, I hand cut each card out, assembled the packaging, and prayed that everything would fit together. Luckily, my measurements were all correct, and I was able to overcome the challenges presented.

Summary:

Creating a deck of cards based on an artist I love was not only difficult, but strangely enjoyable! I've always been a fan of the creepy and disturbing, and being able to translate that into something as refined as playing cards was an interesting task to take on, and one that I'm proud I was able to complete.
